The me-generation seeks pleasure for pleasure’s sake – a self-titillating experience – perhaps to escape a cruel world or simply out of boredom. There are truer pleasures of sharing, contributing, and assisting. Nadav and Avihu’s actions of getting ’high’ in the Holy of Holies was a more subtle, but nevertheless an act of supreme selfishness. Their punishment was death. Each of us has to introspect our quest for pleasures, assessing whether these are escapist acts or true acts of contribution to others and society.
