A ‘lift’ is not just the English term for an ‘elevator’ or for a container being shipped overseas, it is also the universal term used to raise a person to greater heights. In a relational context we are always responsible for lifting the other beyond their self-imposed limits. The human being, walking vertically on his feet, has an innate sense there is something always ‘above’. This spiritual insight is the basis of raising people’s self worth and self-esteem. Hence the parsha’s use of the term to lift the sense of self of all those around us.
